The Teacher Academy Learning Community (TALC) program serves to bridge the work and research the Academy is facilitating in order to bring the best is has to offer to our TALC membership.

Research:
The ATE sponsors ongoing faculty development through quantitative and qualitative research activities in the field of education. Although this is one of the more obscure of the member benefits, this component yields the most enduring effects upon education. The TALC program makes important contributions to  the ongoing research being conducted.  Members are occasionally asked to participate in research by attending certain events, completing online surveys, and participating in focus groups.  As a result, TALC members are asked to have a Consent to Participate in Research as a Human Subject form in their file.

Institutional and Faculty Development :
The ATE faculty development component offers opportunities for development to our own UTSA Faculty. ATE seeks to influence and thus increase the cultural and linguistic diversity sensitivity of the faculty instructing our TALC students. Faculty development is not mandated therefore TALC recognizes our ATE Faculty for taking the time out of their busy schedules to complete additional professional learning sessions. TALC highly encourages our TALC membership to seek out the listed faculty when registering for coursework.

Counseling/Induction:
The purpose of this component is two fold. First is the Counseling program which offers Peer Mentor 1-on-1and/or small group support using the LIBRE Model. The LIBRE Model helps students develop problem-solving self efficacy using five simple steps to affect the students both personally and in the professional realm. This assistance is available to our TALC membership from freshman year and into Induction Year.

The Induction Year program is a continuation of the support extended to our TALC membership to first-year teachers.. This program hopes to alleviate the high attrition rate of first year teachers in the field by providing additional coaching, mentoring, resources, training and support.

School Partnerships:
ATE is forging partnerships with area schools for the benefit of its students. The most visible work occurs between our office and its partner office at SAC. Together, we are creating a teacher pipeline to increase the number of students who start at the community college and who successfully complete teacher certification requirements.

On another level, this component is also forging collaborations between partner school districts in regards to creating a seamless K-16 education system as well as facilitating placement of first year teachers. This is evident through our field experience opportunities with the Office of K-16 and the Communities in Schools program. The Academy for Teacher Excellence is seeking to not only bring national recognition to UTSA for its teacher preparation program, but also to create a reputation for preparing “culturally efficacious teachers ”.

TALC student members also have access to the following benefits and privileges:
  • Participate in a growing learning community of students who have decided to pursue an Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) Bachelors degree or Teacher Certification. TALC will provide you with opportunities to meet and network among fellow TALC members through our sponsored/endorsed programming and educational events.
  • TALC programming and training to enhance your resume/portfolio. Our programming is designed to arm you with experiences that will enrich your preparation as an educator.
  • Hands-on experiences through TALC sponsored/endorsed events. The easiest way to stay current with TALC events and information is through our WebCT site. This site is TALC’s information center. Our programming calendar as well as information and opportunities for TALC students are posted here.

  • Receive individualized and personalized attention from the TALC staff. The TALC staff is here to lend their support as you navigate the UTSA system. I highly encourage you to visit the office at least once a semester to set goals and define your TALC involvement and needs.
